all day long

Our youngest, John, reached his 30s yesterday. We were included in a celebration last Saturday in John and Erin’s backyard, where I took these pictures:

Today John’s grandma Edna and I ate lunch together at the local coffee shop. She enjoyed telling stories about John as the little boy I didn’t get to know but can know vicariously through her. We also talked about the loss of John’s mom, her daughter, 19 years ago today. We agreed on the importance of acknowledging these milestones, both the happy ones and the sad ones. I’m sure it’s still painful for her to remember Margaret-Rose’s death, but she blessed me by saying that even though she had to give up her own daughter, God gave her another daughter—me!
